Coral owls and new blonde hair

IMG_1333

I think summer has come and totally kicked the drizzle of spring out. Super early. It’s supposed to get up into the seventies-eighties this week and stay there well into the weekend. I’m so excited! I LOVE the warm weather, even if it means our upstairs is a total heat box at night, and during the day I just stare out the window at work and wish I could go out and play.

I still really, really, really love the blonde hair. Given, it’s only been five days since I got it dyed, but I just love it more every day!

A few tips, for anyone thinking of going blonde: if you have super dark hair naturally, like I do, allot yourself LOTS of time to get your hair bleached within an inch of its life, be prepared for some burning and itching (mine only burned for the last five minutes), and don’t be alarmed at seeing your hair all yellow (banana yellow) after it’s been bleached and before it’s re-colored.

And if you have any darkened color in your hair, like I did, prepare to be there even longer. Or think about growing it out to where you can chop it off before going in! Fake color is super hard to get out. My hair took a total of six hours to remove enough color and then re-color it to a good blonde. My stylist said it was “hair surgery.” Which is very apt.

And most of all… do NOT try it at home unless you don’t care whether your hair will be canary-colored. Seriously. Also, you could damage your hair. I’ve had too many friends try to blond-ify their hair and have it turn out badly. One’s hair turned green.

And don’t forget to adjust your makeup, as I said in my last post!

Have any of you ever done a super drastic hair color change? What did you learn? Did you ever disastrously color your hair? I think once I’m tired of blonde, which might not be for a long while, I’m going to go red before I dye it back to my natural color.IMG_1338

Other than dyeing my hair, life has been pretty routine. I’ll be working full-time for almost two weeks while my coworker is gone on vacation to Hawaii (so lucky!), so that will be a challenge… to keep the house clean and my husband fed.

I’m notoriously  messy and terribly lazy when it comes to working full days and then having a house to clean up and food to cook. Do you all have any suggestions for healthy and easy breakfast/lunch/dinner ideas?

I have a bit of constructive criticism:

I’m not a fan of the belt in this outfit–it breaks up your upper/lower half by cutting you in two. I love reading your blog and looking at your outfit pictures because your outfits always compliment your hourglass-y figure, which is something I’m trying to learn to do. I think this outfit would look better for your shape if it were less broken up and more continuous from top to bottom.

I love your shape–I recently discovered I’m more or less shaped like this too so I’ve been paying extra close attention to how you pull it off so well.

I agree, although I think it’s also the length and shape of the skirt that messes with my proportions. This type of skirt (all three that I own) tends to make me look straighter because it’s shorter and not as flared. I felt a little undone without the belt… although I think that’s just force of habit/addiction than the fact that it actually needed one. ;)

Thank you! I’m coming to agreeable terms with my shape; I’m very much a pear, but finding good ways to emphasize the fact that I do have a very small waist definitely makes me like the way I am more! Maybe I’ll post about the top tips I’ve found for dressing the shape I am. :)

You look great as a blond! Your makeup post brought back some memories. When I went dark for the first time, I had to add lots more dark eye makeup and color to my routine. It was different, but I ended up loving it. I’ve done all my coloring at home – but I should add that going dark is much easier on your hair than going blond.

I’ve been looking for more easy healthy meal ideas too. Sometimes we make stir-fry and brown rice. The hardest thing is chopping all the vegetables and remembering to put the rice on ahead of time.

Same here! I’ve gone darker before, and I definitely had to bring in more color to the makeup routine! It’s so fun to change makeup with hair color. You get to play with so much more! It is way easier on your hair to go dark; I always did that at home, too. But I was way too afraid of a total disaster to try blonde at home!

Oh, I agree! I always mess up the timing of my meals because I tend to just cook whatever comes to mind first and not think about the fact that some items take way longer than others. Hehe.

Hehe, I thought I’d look fabulous as a redhead once, and I
ended up looking like Lady Elaine Fairchild (I had scraggly short
hair at the time and it didn’t help that the end of my nose tends
        to be red).

We’ve also been making huevos rancheros with
lime cilantro corn on the cob recently. It’s quick, but takes a little juggling
        – the buttered/cilantro’d/limed corn is wrapped in tin foil a put
in the oven while I make the eggs and heat the torillas. It all
seems to cook up at the same time.

Oh, no! I’ve gone red before at home, and I definitely shouldn’t have. Haha! It never turned out well. :D But I think my worst at-home dye job was attempting to highlight my hair, and ending up with reddish-blonde roots and normal-colored everything else because I had dye in my hair at the time. It was so bad! (I guess I HAVE gone blonde at home before, I forgot about that!) I had to wear a hat until I could grab a box of dark dye to fix it.

Oh my, that sounds so delicious! I have to try it. I have been wanting to make some tortillas because homemade are always better (I think, anyway), so once I do I’m going to make that!

You look stunning with the new hair!! Usually brunettes don’t really match with blond but you are totally winning this :).

Thank you! I think it helped that I was blonde when I was little, and my hair (natural hair) always got lighter in the summer.

You’re reminding me of summer! Now where has that gone…..

    • http://www.eccentricowl.com/ Eccentric Owl

It came here! For a week, anyway. ;)

The blonde hair really suits you! And it looks so natural in that close-up of your plait.

Thank you! I think the stylist did a fantastic job making it look natural!

LOVE the blonde hair, looks really good. What a fun change :)

Thank you, Mereana! I love it, too! It’s super fun to be blonde!

I always shake my head at people who think if they buy a box of hair color and throw it on then it’s going to look like the model on the box. Just. No. I’m glad you saw a professional because bleaching out your dark hair was definitely a task! They have to take all the red out that’s naturally underneath dark hair and that’s not easy. But annnnyway… I’m loving your new blonde hair! It’s so summery and pretty! This outfit has some gorgeous bright colors in it too. Your owl shirt is adorable!

    • http://www.eccentricowl.com/ Eccentric Owl

Haha, I know! I have no problem dyeing my hair darker from a box, since it’s naturally dark and I generally don’t care if it’s just one color, but going lighter is a whole different story. There’s NO way I’d go lighter by myself. Especially when I have friends whose hair has turned green or multicolored orange and brown. So bad!
      Thank you!

I’m never going to change my hair color. I barely style it, I get my dad or my sister to trim it for me every 18 months or so and that’s about it :) Yours turned out great though – if I didn’t know you got dark hair before I never would’ve guessed!

About the easy and healthy meals, I don’t have any specific idea in mind, but can you try to cook on the weekend something that freezes well or the leftovers can be easily turned into different meals? That’s what I did when I was juggling school and internship and job.

    • http://www.eccentricowl.com/ Eccentric Owl

You have such pretty hair, I’m glad you’re not going to change it!

Thank you! I am surprised by how well it turned out, actually. I couldn’t imagine myself being blonde, so it was definitely a leap of blind faith that it wouldn’t be horrible!

Good idea! I am a terrible planner, but this weekend I’m definitely going to try to work out meals I can freeze.

  • Kate Brown

Gorgeous outfit! The blonde is looking so good :)

      Thank you!

I’ve bleached my hair a few times with a box-mix and the first time it turned out mustard-yellow. :/ I’m naturally blonde so I suppose it could have been worse…but just trying to lighten it didn’t work out that well either. I did it again a little later with a different kind of color, and it worked a lot better, but it still didn’t look all that natural. I’m definitely done bleaching my own hair! I LOVE your blonde!! It looks so natural, and I love how it gets darker toward the ends.

I lovelovelovelove this new color on you! And seriously, I’m so tempted to rush over to Target and buy that shirt for myself. I’m so in love with owls it’s ridiculous. Even my friends have noticed xDDD I’m starting to think it’s a Kristina thing, because my name is exactly the same as yours, no lie (:

Oh! And I was wondering, if you had the time (which I know might not be the case anymore considering), I would really appreciate a hair tutorial :] If not, that’s okay, but I just really love how you did your hair in this post ^-^

I LOVE YOUR HAIR. It looks seriously awesome and it pairs up with these colors so well! Also your hair style is super cute. How do you do the bun part? Mine always look funky.
